Where I was when…. by Lesley Walker

One of our newest members won the exercise of the month, the theme was the title.

A telephone call from my 19 year old daughter with a plaintive request. Clare was away at university and missing the closeness of family, she asked  “Mum when do you know if you are in love.” In reply, I told her where I was when I realised that I was in love with her father.

On a freezing winter morning. Dave came to pick me up from home as arranged on our previous date.  It was a Saturday and the sun was shining.  We had decided to go for a walk up Reigate Hill.

Wrapped up warm we set off.  Dad was wearing a red polo neck jumper which suited his dark complexion.  He also wore a black and white herringbone patterned coat. He looked very handsome.

We walked hand in hand along a quiet country lane, crossed a bridge and entered woodland.  It started to snow heavily, but we didn’t notice.  We were happy to be in one another’s company.  We talked about our future together, it seemed such a natural thing to do, not embarrassing or difficult but easy and exciting.  From the woodland, the path opened out onto a wonderful vista across the Surrey hills. What a place to be with this gorgeous creature beside me!  I was in love, no doubt in my mind.

I suddenly realised that I was still holding the phone, but I was back on Reigate Hill in 1970 with my Dave.

Sorry Clare, I said, just trust your instinct.
